Daytime summer skin care is typically lighter than winter skin care. High humidity in the summer provides more hydration to the skin, but you need products to lock the moisture in. Follow the steps below to keep your face protected on those sunny summer days.
Apply sunscreen often
If you do nothing else for your skin this summer, wear sunscreen.
Look for sunscreens that offer:
- at least SPF 30
- broad spectrum protection
- lip protection
Exfoliate once or twice a week
Sunscreen is important, and sweat is the body’s natural way of cooling off. But both can do a number on your pores. That’s where exfoliation comes in.
It helps unclog the pores and reduces blemishes, though it is best not to exfoliate if you’re sunburned. Let the skin heal on its own without an added irritant.
While it’s OK to exfoliate more frequently in the summer than in the winter, it should still be limiting it to once or twice per week.
Boost Your Skin Protection with Antioxidants
Antioxidants like vitamin C and E are powerful free radical fighters. Use a serum with these ingredients to boost your skin’s protection against harsh environmental pollutants.
Apply a Lightweight Moisturizer
There’s usually enough moisture in the air during summer to keep the skin hydrated. However, the humidity and heat also increase sweating, so you lose moisture.
We need products that contain humectants—ingredients that lock in moisture. Some of the best humectants are hyaluronic acid, glycerin, urea, aloe vera, etc.
